Temporary workers

Closed license

A temporary foreign worker is someone who comes to Canada to work and live temporarily. They are usually tied to a particular employer with a closed permit for a fixed period.

Temporary foreign workers have the same labor rights and obligations as all Quebec workers.

They are also protected by the Act respecting occupational health and safety and covered by the Act respecting industrial accidents and occupational diseases in the event of a work-related accident.

Open permit

An open work permit allows you to work for any employer in Canada for a specified period of time.

This permit could only be obtained in specific situations

  • Foreign student who has graduated from a designated institution
  • Victim of violence in the workplace
  • The spouse, common-law partner or dependent child of a low-skilled or highly-skilled worker.
  • You are in Canada and are being sponsored as the applicant’s spouse, de facto spouse, conjugal partner or accompanying dependent child.
